James Nares. James Nares.

Best known for her process-oriented paintings in which a large, isolated brushstroke seems to float on a blank, monochromatic surface. To achieve this sense of weightlessness, Nares invented a special device that allowed her to hang above the frame and paint directly from her head, avoiding any drips or other "signs of gravity" that might result from painting on an upright canvas. Niles compares her artistic routine to a home run in a baseball game, which can sometimes be accomplished in a single stroke, but more often requires multiple attempts. Although she emphasizes brushstrokes similar to those of some Abstract Expressionists, she sees her practice as more of a cycle and repetition than the relatively unfettered mark-making of the so-called "action painters".
