Leila Jeffreys. Leila Jeffreys.
A renowned contemporary artist whose work involves photography, moving images and installations. She is best known for her work on birds photographed by humans, exploring and subverting the conventions of portraiture. Living and working in Sydney with her husband and son, Jeffries sees her bird subjects as creatures, part of a process of expanding the viewer's mind by drawing attention to the interdependence of species. Jeffries' work is the result of years of research and exploration. In the tradition of artist-activists, she conducts fieldwork, collaborations with natural resource conservationists, ornithologists, and sanctuaries, as well as champion programs to protect and restore endangered habitats.
Exhibiting for 15 years in Australia and around the world, from Sydney and Melbourne to Paris, Brussels and Los Angeles, in 2023 her work was curated for the Best of the Best exhibition at Foto Grafica, New York, as part of the Contemporary Animal Photography exhibition in Tallinn and Stockholm. She joined some of the world's most respected photographers in Civilization: The Way We Live Now, a landmark exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London in 2023.
